LIFE SUBSED at the ISHS International Symposium on Growing Media, Soilless Cultivation, and Compost Utilization in Horticulture – Ghent (Belgium), 22-27 August 2021

LIFE SUBSED took part in the II edition of the ISHS International Symposium on Growing Media, Soilless Cultivation, and Compost Utilization in Horticulture, which was held in Ghent (Belgium) from 22 to 27 August 2021.

It represents a reference event for all operators in the sector, and the issues of environmental impact and the circular economy are increasingly recurrent in the programs of each appointment: this is certainly a favorable environment for making the LIFE SUBSED project known and collecting interesting feedback from operators and researchers.

The LIFE SUBSED project was presented by the researchers of the CREA-OF in Pescia thanks to a poster created for the occasion entitled “Sustainable substrates for agriculture from dredged remediated marine  sediments: from ports to pots (LIFE 17 ENV/IT/000347)” (downloadable here).

LIFE SUBSED at the XII SedNet International Conference (online) – 28 June-2 July 2021

The SedNet international conference entitled “Sediment Challenges and Opportunities due to Climate Change and Sustainable Development” this year took place online, from 28 June to 2 July (the program is available here).

The conference was attended by both the team of researchers from the CNR-IRET of Pisa and the team of researchers from the CREA-OF of Pescia.

During the event the groups gave some speech and presented posters relating to the objectives, actions and results of the LIFE SUBSED project.

Dr. Cristina Macci, from the CNR-IRET team, held the presentation entitled “Recovery and environmental recycling of sediments: CNR-IRET Pisa experience“, summarising all the projects in which the team has participated over the years focused on the treatment and the reuse of dredged sediments. By clicking on the preview below you can access and download the presentation in pdf!

The CREA-OF team prepared for the event an oral presentation and a poster about to the LIFE SUBSED project.

In the video below, Dr. Stefania Nin of the CREA-OF team holding the presentation entitled “Developing pattern in Prunus laurocerasus grown on sediment enriched substrates (LIFE SUBSED 17 ENV/IT/000347)” (available here in pdf format).

In the video below, also Dr. Stefania Nin of the CREA-OF team illustrates the contents of the poster entitled “Quality assessment in wild strawberry fruit and basil leaf from plants cultivated on dredged remediated sediment (SUBSED LIFE17 ENV/IT/000347)” (available here in pdf format).

Networking meeting with Luca Sittoni – 2 August 2021

On 2 August 2021, Cristina Macci, Grazia Masciandaro, CNR researchers and involved in the SUBSED project, met Luca Sittoni, senior advisor in the Ecosystem and Sediment Dynamics department of Deltares (Netherlands) and Program Manager and member of the EcoShape Building with Nature Management Team.

Cristina Macci and Luca Sittoni met in the “12th International SedNet Conference (online)” when, during the “Circular Economy” session, Cristina gave a presentation entitled “Recovery and environmental recycling of sediments: CNR IRET Pisa experience”, and Luca Sittoni gave the Keynote presentation “Beneficial Sediment Use and NatureBased Solutions: opportunities for sustainable and circular developments”.

During the meeting, the problem of sediments dredging and management was addressed, focusing on the importance of their remediation using natural technologies (NBS, Natuaral Based solution) and of their reuse.

In the Netherlands the sediments that comply with the limits set by national legislation, can be reused in the environment and also in agriculture, while in Italy it is not still possible.

This meeting gave rise to the interest in collaborating on future projects, in participating in the drafting of manuals containing case studies on sediment remediation and recovery (PIANC report on the Beneficial Use of Sediments) and the possibility of organizing a workshop to present their own experiences.

30 months monitoring meeting – 22 April 2021

On 22 April 2021 the beneficiaries of the LIFE Subsed project and the external monitor Dr. Carlo Ponzio met during an online meeting on the occasion of the monitoring for the 30 months of the LIFE Subsed project. During the meeting, the progress of the project and the actions planned in the following months were illustrated.

Subsequently, on Monday 26 April, the beneficiaries and the external monitor met live at Flora Toscana to visit the experimental sites of the LIFE SUBSED project, and to personally verify the progress and results achieved with the planned activities.

The first Italian workshop of the LIFE SUBSED project – 8 July 2021

Flora Toscana, with the contribution of the entire consortium, organized the first Italian workshop of the LIFE SUBSED project, entitled “Substrati sostenibili per l’agricoltura ottenuti da sedimenti marini dragati e bonificati: dai porti ai vasi” (Sustainable substrates for agriculture obtained from dredged and reclaimed marine sediments: from ports to vessels-  here the program).

103 participants took part in the online event: agronomists, researchers, students and operators in the agricultural, floricultural and nursery sectors.

At the opening of the workshop, greetings were held from figures relevant for the success of LIFE SUBSED and the future exploitation of its results: the consortium thanks Dr. Gennaro Giliberti, manager of the Tuscany Region, Dr. Giulio Lotti, President of the Order of Agronomist and Forestry Doctors of the Province of Pistoia (which sponsored the event), and Dr. Stefano Gori, technical-scientific director of the interprovincial Lucca-Pistoia Nursery Association.

LIFE SUBSED also thanks Prof. Edgardo Giordani, Associate Professor of the University of Florence and coordinator of the LIFE HORTISED project (in which LIFE SUBSED has its roots), and Dr. Sofia Mannelli, president of the Bionet Green Chemistry Association.

During the workshop, in addition to presenting the progress of the LIFE SUBSED project and its objectives and expected results, a discussion was opened between the participants regarding the possibility of implementing circular economy solutions in the current regulatory context, reaching the common conclusion that it would be preferable to have support from the legislator for the implementation of these eco-sustainable technologies.

By clicking on the following images, you coul download the slides presented during the last workshop of the LIFE SUBSED project. The consortium thanks everyone for the participation and interest shown in our initiative. We look forward to welcoming you again during our next events!

For the occasion, the group presented an abstract entitled “Landfarming to valorize phytoremediated sediments for their reuse in nursery “LIFE SUBSED LIFE17 ENV/IT/000347””.

Together with the abstract, a poster (downloadable here) was also presented, which systematically illustrates the process and the results of the landfarming carried out during the LIFE SUBSED project.

LIFE SUBSED at the XIII edition of Giornate Scientifiche SOI – 22-23 June 2021

After a pause due to the difficult moment experienced with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Giornate Scientifiche SOI (SOI Scientific Days) returned in June 2021. The chosen theme, namely that of sustainability and how the objectives of the UN 2030 Agenda are declined by those in Italy who deal with research and dissemination in the field of horticulture, is perfectly in line with the contents of the LIFE SUBSED project.

The team of researchers from CREA-OF of Pescia brought LIFE SUBSED to the attention of the conference participants, through a presentation of the poster entitled “Sustainable substrates for agriculture from dredged remediated marine sediments: from ports to pots (LIFE 17 ENV/IT/000347)” (available here in pdf). Below is the recording of the presentation given by Dr. Maurizio Antonetti.
