Flora Toscana brings LIFE SUBSED to the IFTF2021 in Netherlands!!
The Cooperative took part in the International Floriculture Trade Fair IFTF2021 which was organized by HPP Exhibitions and held from 3 to 5 November 2021 in Vijhuizen at Expo Haarlemmermeer.
With its 10th edition (after a forced pause in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic), the fair promotes the trade of flowers and potted plants, aiming at the same time at increasing their production and consumption.
IFTF is an international platform where developments and trends in the horticultural sector are discussed, and represents a valid opportunity to promote the contents and results of the LIFE SUBSED project and its circular strategy.
Flora Toscana, with the contribution of the entire consortium, organized the first Italian workshop of the LIFE SUBSED project, entitled “Substrati sostenibili per l’agricoltura ottenuti da sedimenti marini dragati e bonificati: dai porti ai vasi” (Sustainable substrates for agriculture obtained from dredged and reclaimed marine sediments: from ports to vessels- here the program).
103 participants took part in the online event: agronomists, researchers, students and operators in the agricultural, floricultural and nursery sectors.
At the opening of the workshop, greetings were held from figures relevant for the success of LIFE SUBSED and the future exploitation of its results: the consortium thanks Dr. Gennaro Giliberti, manager of the Tuscany Region, Dr. Giulio Lotti, President of the Order of Agronomist and Forestry Doctors of the Province of Pistoia (which sponsored the event), and Dr. Stefano Gori, technical-scientific director of the interprovincial Lucca-Pistoia Nursery Association.
LIFE SUBSED also thanks Prof. Edgardo Giordani, Associate Professor of the University of Florence and coordinator of the LIFE HORTISED project (in which LIFE SUBSED has its roots), and Dr. Sofia Mannelli, president of the Bionet Green Chemistry Association.
During the workshop, in addition to presenting the progress of the LIFE SUBSED project and its objectives and expected results, a discussion was opened between the participants regarding the possibility of implementing circular economy solutions in the current regulatory context, reaching the common conclusion that it would be preferable to have support from the legislator for the implementation of these eco-sustainable technologies.
By clicking on the following images, you coul download the slides presented during the last workshop of the LIFE SUBSED project. The consortium thanks everyone for the participation and interest shown in our initiative. We look forward to welcoming you again during our next events!
The LIFE SUBSED project has been presented to the representatives of the Coldiretti association during a visit at Flora Toscana. Flora Toscana and CREA researchers and technicians illustrated the objectives, expected results and progress of the project. Particular attention has been paid to the issues of circularity and environmental sustainability.

After obtaining the necessary authorizations to start the cultivation tests on the Italian sites (Tuscany Region adoptions n.4592 and 4593 of 27/03/2020 and n.4837 of 1/04/2020), the beneficiaries moved on to the preparation of the experimental sites and (obtained the permission of the Tuscany Region) on the start of the experimental activity.
The phytoremediated sediment has been delivered to the Italian sites and has been used for the preparation of the cultivation pots according to the experimental schemes defined. Currently seedlings of laurel, blueberry, wild strawberry, olive and protea have been potted. Concerning basil and calla, sowing and planting are foreseen in the coming months.
In parallel with the cultivation activities, monitoring activities have started by taking and analysing samples obtained from each cultivar.
Also this year – thanks to the Flora Toscana participation – LIFE Subsed took part to the IPM Essen fair. This fair is one of the most important fairs in floriculture sector in the world, and this year 54,000 (+1,200 compared to 2019) visitors from 100 countries came to see the products and services of the 1,538 exhibitors. More than ever, climate change and sustainability have been the dominant subjects at the fair. This context has been perfect for the dissemination of the contents of the LIFE SUBSED project, and several positive opinions have been collected by visitors to the stand organized by Flora Toscana.
The contents of the LIFE Subsed project were presented to the students of the floriculture course of the University of Florence, accompanied by Professor Baldi as part of a training exercise that was conducted at the Flora Toscana headquarters.
The IFTF fair is one of the most important events for world floriculture. More than 300 exhibitors from over 30 countries and over 25,000 visitors from over 100 countries took part in the event, which represents a very important opportunity for the exchange of information and the start of cooperation. During the event, the Flora Toscana team exhibited the objectives and expected results of the LIFE Subsed project to its visitors, and distributed the gadgets and promotional material produced during the project.
Yesterday the first LIFE Subsed project monitoring meeting was held at the Flora Toscana coordinator’s premises. The project team and the Dr. Carlo Ponzio project monitor participated at the event.
Following are the presentations and some photos of the day.
LIFE Subsed at IPM ESSEN 2019 – 22-25 January 2019
From January 22nd to 25th the IPM ESSEN 2019 was held, the most important international fair for the gardening sector. The participation of around 1,600 exhibitors from 50 countries and international experts makes IPM ESSEN the world’s number one platform for the exchange of information and the creation of orders in the gardening sector. The event is a unique opportunity for the dissemination of the LIFE Subsed project, and for the presentation of the future commercial offer that will derive from it. The coordinator Flora Toscana took care to present at its stand the objectives and expected results of the European project LIFE Subsed.
During the fair, information material was distributed to the various stakeholders in the sector: the following is portrayed by the project manager LIFE Subsed Dr. Maria Castellani with the manager of the province of Pistoia Renato Ferretti.
Furthermore, during the event the networking relationship with the LIFE AgriSed project was further consolidated. In the pictures below, Dr. Castellani delivers information material to the staff of Agri Vivai, coordinator of the LIFE AgriSed project.
